How Long Should I Walk My Dog?

Somewhere between 30 minutes and two hours a day, and where your dog lands depends on breed, age and the weather. Here's how to find your number.

"Enough exercise" is the most repeated and least specified advice in dog ownership. So let's specify it. These are working targets, start here, then read your actual dog, who did not read the chart.

Daily targets by breed group

Breed groupDaily totalFeels like
Working & herding (border collie, shepherd, husky)90–120+ minTwo long walks plus real play or a job
Sporting (labrador, golden, spaniel, pointer)60–90 minA long walk and a fetch session
Terriers & mid-energy mixes45–60 minTwo brisk walks with sniff time
Toy & companion (shih tzu, chihuahua, cavalier)30–45 minTwo or three short strolls
Flat-faced breeds (pug, bulldog, frenchie)20–40 minShort, slow, and never in heat

Split the total across at least two outings. Dogs are crepuscular by habit, a real morning walk and a real evening walk beat one giant slog, and your carpet will agree.

Adjust for age

Adjust for weather

Walk duration by age, at a glance

Age changes the answer more sharply than breed does in the first two years and again in the last few. The puppy column below uses the widely taught five-minutes-per-month-of-age guideline, per outing, up to twice a day.

How many walks a day, not just how many minutes

Two dogs can both get sixty minutes and have completely different days. One giant walk leaves fourteen hours of nothing on either side of it. Three short outings break the day into intervals a dog can anticipate, which is most of what reduces the pacing and the barking at the window. If you can only change one thing about your routine, split the total before you extend it.

The practical floor for most healthy adult dogs is two outings, morning and evening, with a garden or a quick street break in between if you are out of the house all day. Puppies and seniors both need more frequent, shorter trips, for opposite reasons.

Can you walk a dog too much?

Yes, and it is easier than people expect with young dogs, flat-faced breeds and seniors. The failure mode is rarely one dramatic day, it is a fortnight of slightly too much that shows up as reluctance at the door, licking at paws or joints, and naps that swallow the afternoon. Puppies are the highest-risk group because they will happily keep going past the point their joints can afford, so the limit has to come from you rather than from them.

The safe way to increase is roughly ten percent a week, and to add sniffing or gentle hills before you add raw distance.

What counts besides walking

Walking is the default because it is easy to schedule, but it is not the only currency. Twenty minutes of scent games in the house, a training session that makes the dog think, a swim, or a proper play session with a dog they actually like can each replace a chunk of walking time. Cognitive load tires dogs in a way that pavement does not, which is why a rainy day with fifteen minutes of nose work often produces a calmer evening than a damp thirty-minute march.

This matters most on the days you genuinely cannot get out: the goal is a tired dog, not a completed step count.

Common questions

How long can you walk a dog in one go?

A fit adult dog of a working or sporting breed can comfortably manage one to two hours with breaks and water, provided the weather is mild and they are conditioned for it. Puppies, flat-faced breeds and seniors should stay well under an hour per outing. Build up gradually rather than testing the ceiling on a whim.

How long should I walk my dog by weight?

Weight is a poor guide on its own, since a forty-kilo greyhound needs less than a fifteen-kilo border collie. Use breed group and energy level first, then adjust for age and any joint or heart conditions.

Is one walk a day enough?

It can meet the minute count but rarely meets the need. Most dogs do better on the same total split into two or three outings, because the gaps between them are what shape the rest of the day.

Should I walk my dog before or after eating?

Leave a gap around meals, particularly for large and deep-chested breeds where vigorous activity close to eating is associated with bloat. A gentle stroll is generally fine, a run is not.

How much walking does a puppy need?

About five minutes per month of age, per outing, up to twice a day, which is fifteen minutes at three months and twenty-five at five. Free play on soft ground does not count against that budget, forced pavement miles do.

Signs you've got the number wrong

Under-walked looks like: destruction after you leave, barking at everything, pacing in the evening, pulling like a freight train the moment the leash clips on. Over-walked looks like: lagging behind on routes they used to lead, long recovery naps that swallow the whole day, paw licking, next-day stiffness. Both are your dog answering the question for you.

Quality beats mileage

A "sniffari", a slow walk where the dog chooses the route and reads every message on every pole tires a dog more than the same minutes at forced march. Scent work is cognitive load. If time is short, trade distance for sniffing and both of you win.

Track it, don't guess it

Most people dramatically overestimate how much they walk the dog in a normal week (workdays blur, weekends inflate the average). Recording walks for two ordinary weeks gives you the real number. Pawport's walk mode logs the route, duration and weather onto a passport page automatically, so "how much does she actually get?" has an answer, and the best walks become pages you keep.
