"Senior" isn't one age, a Great Dane is senior at six while a chihuahua is barely middle-aged at eight. But whenever it arrives, the playbook is the same: more frequent checkups, small home adjustments, and refusing to write treatable problems off as "just getting old."
When senior starts
| Size | Senior from | Checkups |
|---|---|---|
| Small (<10 kg) | ~10–11 years | Every 6 months |
| Medium (10–25 kg) | ~8–9 years | Every 6 months |
| Large (25–40 kg) | ~7 years | Every 6 months |
| Giant (40+ kg) | ~6 years | Every 4–6 months |
Twice-yearly vet visits with bloodwork matter because a dog year is roughly five to seven of ours, an annual checkup is like you seeing a doctor once every six years. Keep the results together; a tidy health record is what lets a vet spot a kidney value drifting over three visits instead of treating each number in isolation.
"Just old age" that's actually treatable
- Slowing on walks / hesitating at stairs, usually arthritis, and modern pain management works well. Dogs hide pain heroically; stiffness after rest is the tell.
- Fussiness about food, often dental pain, not pickiness. (Prevention lives in the tooth-brushing guide.)
- Accidents indoors, could be kidneys, a UTI, or cognitive change; all manageable, none of them "naughtiness".
- Night restlessness, staring at walls, getting "stuck" in corners, canine cognitive dysfunction is real and has treatment options, especially early.
- Cloudy eyes, some of it is normal lens hardening; some is cataracts. Only an exam tells the difference.
Home adjustments that punch above their weight
- Traction. Rugs or yoga-mat runners on slippery floors are the single best arthritis accommodation.
- Ramps or steps to the sofa and car, jumping down does more damage than jumping up.
- A firmer, warmer bed away from drafts. Old joints hate cold floors.
- Shorter, more frequent walks beat one long haul, and sniffing time becomes the point, not the pace. Watch heat harder too: seniors sit a row stricter on every temperature threshold.
- Keep the brain fed. Puzzle feeders, new (gentle) routes, scent games, mental exercise slows cognitive decline measurably.
Weight becomes medicine
Every extra kilo lands on aging joints and organs. Senior metabolism drops, so yesterday's portions quietly become too much. Monthly weigh-ins and the rib check matter more now than at any other life stage.
And document these years generously. The grey-muzzle era is slower, sweeter and more photogenic than any puppy phase, it deserves more pages, not fewer.
