The guilty look is appeasement, a reaction to your face, not the crime.
Studies have shown dogs offer the lowered head and sideways ears in response to an angry-looking human, whether or not they did anything at all. It’s not a confession; it’s “please don’t be mad.”
Punishing after the fact only teaches that your arrival is scary. If the shredding happens when you're out, it might be separation anxiety, which is panic, not mischief.

The lowered head, averted eyes and tucked tail are appeasement signals: the dog is reacting to your tone and posture, not to a memory of what it did. Studies that scolded dogs at random found the guilty look appeared whether or not the dog had misbehaved. Correct in the moment or not at all, and read the rest of the signals in dog body language.
